Codex Supplements

Codex Supplement Iyanden is due to be released, June 15th, and is the first of a series of supplements that will be coming out. Many of us gamers and hobbyist have wanted much more specific army information, and this is the way Games Workshop is going to handle it.

What does this mean, besides a new way to extend the releases for each race?

First off it was spectacular that Games Workshop did not wait to publish these, and seeing one in the same month as an army codex release is nice. Of course it means that Games Workshop can push the envelope regarding its releases, and increase sales for those players playing each codex. I can easily imagine now how new chapters of marines might get their own supplements.

What I like about it is this, it helps really expand our game in new directions, giving us more detail, more special units, and more options to field on the tabletop. This will help increase the number of different units and combination army types that we will see on the gaming tables.

While I am sure there are many that will just say its one more way to cash in for Games Workshop, but I am going to say that I think this is a good move for our gaming hobby. There were many people that were concerned and disapointed when Chaos Space Marines did not handle the traitor legions well, and lumped all of Chaos Marines into one dex. Now we have an answer from Games Workshop, and we should be happy about it as our hobby will begin to expand beyond what we had first anticipated.

I will be eager to see this supplement, and the future of how these supplements will effect our hobby overall.

  1. I was just about say something about this.
I feel like a Farseer - I have seen the future... and it's ter-, wait it's actually quite nice.
A very exciting prospect, hopefully we'll have to stop hearing Chaos Marine players complaining about their legion not being represented soon.

    1. Oh don't F'ing tease about that. A fracking Alpha Legion book? I would cry tears of dark joy.

  2. I'm guessing this might be how they're going to deal with black templars

    1. I am glad someone else finally said this, as I had been thinking it since the announcement. It even sort of fits all the contradicting rumors that had been floating around about them.

    2. AS long as we don't get rolled into Codex: Ultrasmurfs, I'm happy.

  3. Well, as long as the codex supplement is considerably less pricey than the codex itself, and available without an ipad, I fully support this path!

    1. Well, I suppose you don't support it. Price is the same as the Codex unfortunately. I still love this direction.

    2. $40 vs $50, the real question is whether the supplement is standalone. If it is, $40 seems worth it to me. If it costs $40 and you need the $50 book to play, its a little salty.

  4. Hmm, when I was checking out iTunes on the weekend, it was there for pre-order with an expected date of June 8th. I'll have to double check that tonight, but that means we could see the digital edition a full week before the hardcopy version. It could be a great way for GW to promote the digital editions.

    1. In addition, some text from the preview pages talks about 'Alterations and additions to the rules given in Codex:Eldar, ... for an Iyanden warhost'

I'll be posting a rules review on Friday night, assuming the pre-release date is correct.

  5. I think its amazing, even priced at the same as a codex. It's not mandatory to run the army, but gives you options and fluff if you want more for your chosen force.

    1. Wha? Seriously, a $50 suppliment? I realize it's not mandatory but . . .

    2. I dunno, since you can run an Iyanden list without it, its not THAT bad, still at $40 its more than I'd like to spend for what is probably a few modified unit entries and an altered force org.

  6. I've got the entire iPad Sample, the information from the Daily WD for the 3rd of June, and the juicy bits I pulled from their video over at Heresy Online.

  7. Considering how well Iyanden matches the releases for the Eldar codex, I'm still holding out hope that new jetbikes will be released with a Saim-Hann supplement. One can dream.

    1. Why is everyone obsessed with "new jetbikes?" The jetbikes are gorgeous; if you have been with the riders, that's no problem: just convert some guardian torsos.

I have to wonder about people who want to see new jetbikes, particular in conjunction with a Saim-Hann supplement release.

Those of us who play Saim-Hann already have so many jetbikes that the last thing we want to see is a redesign. For those who don't play Saim-Hann, why do they care what the jetbikes look like anyway? For them, jetbikes are meant to be run in squads of three and are only used to snag objectives on the last turn (or be used for their jetbike seer councils).

For those of who play Saim-Hann already, the only new model we even care about at all is Nuadhu.

    2. Sorry; autocorrected. "If you have a problem with the riders...."

    3. Anonymous... I remember these bikes released in 1993, at least they deserve the same treatment as other armies getting two or three bike variants since that time. Not to mention a kit that sports shoddy riders and hasn´t got even the SINGLE AND ONLY addition, the shuriken cannon, since 1993 is just a poor job no matter how you look at it. I´ve got my riders converted, but that doesn´t mean the kit should be shoddy and outdated. It should offer good riders and options for the price, so converting is a CHOICE, not an obligation.

  8. I'd kinda expect the book to be 1/2 to 2/3 the cost of a full codex, the digital version is 121 pages vs the usual codex amount of around or just less than 200. As I don't own any Apple-named pap I can't actually check the price on the digital pre-order. Bah.

Won't know if its worth it till someone reviews it though :/

  9. Checked it earlier, listed as £24.99 pre-order for digital edition. Seems a bit pricey for a "supplement". 10 years ago it would of been free in white dwarf lol

  10. So it's Crusade of Fire all over again? 100 pages of pretty pictures and five pages of actual rules...

...back in the day, Codex: Craftworld Eldar contained alternate rulesets for all the "name" Craftworlds at a lower price (compared to the codex price at the time). Gonna be derpy if every Traitor Legion and First Founding Chapter (along with Black Templars, Legion of the Damned, Deathwatch, etc.) gets a separate expensive expansion.

Still not going to believe there will be "most wanted" Kroot, Gretchin, Genestealer Cult, Lost and the Damned, Mechanicus/Dark Mechanicus, Imperial Agents, Squats/Chaos Squats, Felinids, Armoured/Drop Troop/Deathworld/Hive World IG, etc. supplements, oh no, it's mostly going to be SPESS MUHREENS anyway.

  11. Council of spirit seers, new warlord table, new primaris power for battle discipline, new special items, can make wraith lord/knight your warlord.... Ad more apparently. Can't wait >_<

  12. So is there a final verdict on whether this supplement is fluff only or does it contain new rules?

  13. I tend to think its a great idea, but that if they're going to be so closely tied to the 'vanilla' codex, they really should have their price dropped a tad...

  14. I think its a great idea too. I think its a tad expensive, but at the end of the day, if you are quibbling over $5/$10 and are playing Warhammer.. You are probably going to have a frustratingly short time playing this hobby.

As an Eldar player in New Zealand, I dropped $200 on release day and that netted me.. an Eldar Codex, Psychic cards & box of wraithguard.

I don't think I will be buying the Iyanden suppliment. I love how cool the wraithguard look, but an army of them is just not my thing. In my current list I take 6 wraithguard + Farseer and they are essentially a bullet magnet, nothing more.

  15. I hope this will give all the various IG regiments a new lease on life...or at least plastic troop choices aside from Cadians and catachans!

  16. I'm not going to hold my breath; but if a Kroot Supplement book is released, I will collapse in a convulsing schism of pure joy. If I then discover it is iPad only, I will vehemently curse Games Workshop, its children, and all that it stands for on this miserable, God-forsaken excuse for a desolate rock... then I will go out and buy an iPad. ;)
